Prioritizing Work-Life Balance: Use Your PTO and Live Fully

Creating a healthy work-life balance isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, especially in the demanding medical field. With the constant pressure to perform, it’s easy to feel drained if you don’t take the time to recharge. That’s why paid time off (PTO) exists—to help you balance work with time to reconnect with yourself and the people you love. Yet, so many people let their PTO pile up, convinced they’re “too busy” to take a break. Trust me, waiting for the “right time” to relax might mean you’ll be waiting forever.

Break Free from the Cycle of Burnout

We've all seen it: colleagues who never take a day off, never go on vacation, and end up feeling resentful and overworked. Their frustration often impacts the entire team, creating a cycle of stress and burnout. When you don’t use your PTO, you’re essentially allowing the system to work you to exhaustion without taking full advantage of the resources meant to prevent that.

If taking extended time off seems impossible, start with something simple. Take a mid-week mental health day to give yourself a break, or end the week a little early with a Friday off for a spa day. Or, make a mini-staycation out of it by taking both a Friday and a Monday off, so you can enjoy a long weekend in your city. Remember, this isn’t about luxury—it’s about sustainability.

Lessons from a Hard-Working Generation

My grandmother worked tirelessly her entire life, only reaching a place now where she can enjoy the fruits of her labor. She’s lucky to be around to finally experience this phase, but I see patients every day who won’t be able to say the same. Some are younger than her and dealing with chronic conditions, serious illnesses, or other life-altering health concerns. We are reminded constantly in healthcare that life doesn’t wait for us to start enjoying it. That’s why I’m so passionate about encouraging everyone to use their PTO. Take time now, not later, to live fully while you’re able.

Enjoying the Work You Do Through a Balanced Life

Balancing work and life isn’t just about taking time off; it’s about recharging so you can actually enjoy the work you do. When you make space to rest and reset, you return to the OR or clinic with renewed energy, a fresh perspective, and a positive outlook, making even the busiest days feel more rewarding. In healthcare, burnout is all too common, but by using your PTO and setting boundaries, you can stay passionate and engaged, appreciating the little moments of connection with patients and camaraderie with your team. Ultimately, a balanced approach lets you bring your best self to both work and life, making each more fulfilling.

When was the last time you took time just for yourself? If it’s been more than a month, check your PTO balance now, and start planning. No matter how small, it’s time to make yourself a priority.
