AfroTech X Healthcare

This past week was indescribable! With AfroTech being in Houston for the first time, I knew it would draw incredible people to the city. Being that I work in healthcare, I was very intentional about the events outside of the conference that I attended. Healthcare and Technology sit at a unique intersection.

I first attended STEM So(ul)cial which was founded by Camille Smith. STEM So(ul)cial is an organization dedicated to connecting, developing, and backing aspiring and established Black STEM professional worldwide. This event really sent the tone with it's intentionality of fostering a true connection amongst individuals with similar professional and personal commonalities. Camille is also such a sweet person. I can't wait to see how far STEM Soulcial goes!

Second up was Healthcare HealthTech which was hosted by Dr. Oluwadamilola (Lola) Adeyeye,. This event included panel discussions from a range of healthcare professionals that either implement technologies in their practice, or work directly with systems and devices that shape medicine. I was excited to hear Magdala Chery, DO, MBS, MPH speak again, as I sat in on one of her panel discussions over the summer. Alexander Onyina also brought so much insight to the conversation as well.

Last and certainly not least, the Black Health Connect event was a MUST! After the Q1 mixer in March, I decided to attend the Conference in July and since they were back in Houston, you know I had to attend the Q4 mixer. I really appreciate the amount of vendors that were in attendance. It almost felt like a mini version of their conference. Per usual, I met some amazing individuals that I typically would not have met on a normal day. Can't wait until the next BHC conference this summer!

All I can say is that although I don't directly work in Tech, this conference brought some major heat to the city of Houston this past week. Word on the street is that AfroTech will be back in Houston next year. I'm looking forward to it already!
